Effects of Irrational Beliefs About Marital Relationships on Marital Satisfaction

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study set out to verify the effects of irrational beliefs about marital relationships on marital satisfaction.
Methods: A total of 370 couples completed a survey that measures marital satisfaction and irrational beliefs about marital relationships. The researchers conducted multi-level analysis to examine the effects of the beliefs on marital satisfaction. To determine the net effect of irrational beliefs on marital satisfaction, the researchers tested and statistically controlled for the effect of demographic variables.
Results: With the exception of the belief of being a perfect sexual partner, there were four irrational beliefs that had significant effects on marital satisfaction: disagreement of partners, inability to read each other’s feelings and thoughts, invariableness of themselves and their relationship, and the partner’s stereotyped sex-role.
Conclusions: Counselors need to assist couples in understanding the effects of dysfunctional beliefs so they can have realistic and rational beliefs about marital relationships.
